Detailed Instructions

Task: You will write a paper of interpretive literary criticism on A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare.Find two critical analyses on the play, at least one of which you will argue against in your essay. The other critic should be used, along with Tyson’s chapter 7 on structuralist theory, to support your own reading of the play as it differs from the first critic. But you will also compare and contrast them showing some pattern between the two critical analysis. In a slight variation, you may argue against both critics with only Tyson to support your alternative reading.

Sources: You may make use of other scholarly sources such as books or journal articles to provide information about the language and content of the play. Non-scholarly sources such as Wikipedia or independent web pages should not be used.Shoddy generic critical sources such as Cliffs Notes, Schmoop, SparkNotes, and Enotes should not be used!

Format: Essays for this course must use MLA style formatting and citations.The MLA style guide, any good English manual (like the Diana Hacker series), or the OWL at Purdue website (owl.english.purdue.edu)can give you help on using this style correctly.

1. I will be including a Sample Essay: A Structuralist Analysis of Shakespeare that contains a number of features that you mind find helpful (its extremely important that you follow the format, although the sample essay does not have all the MLA formatting).

2. Choose two critical analysis from “Bloom’s Shakespeare Through the Ages.”In the introduction, please make sure to introduce Tyson’s book on structural criticism and have a tightly focused thesis and don’t try to analyze the whole play (see the sample essay).

3. Examples of proper quotations and citations of plays (make sure to include act number, scene number, and line number).

4. The use of Tyson’s text and the use of structuralism.

5. Required mode: persuasively presenting your analysis in contrast to another critic.

6. I’m also including some class notes that include a list of themes/motifs that might be useful for writing the essay (Love, Greek Mythology, Play within Play).

7. I will be including the reading of the play from the assigned book (Kennedy and Gioia) and additional scholarly peer-reviewed sources that may or may not be useful. In addition, I will also be attaching Tyson’s chapter in structuralism.

8. I also need an outline.
