Assignment Instructions & Requirements:
As a culminating assignment for the course, the student will prepare a Power Point presentation on a topic that would serve as a Legal Guide for school/department/college policy and procedure on the topic.
• The audience for the guide and for your presentation is a group of professional educators – your peers – working for a public institution who are familiar with the requirements of their job. They have all been on the job for several years. You do not need to teach them their job. You need to discuss laws with which they should be familiar that affect their job.
• The focus of your guide is on identifying the specific laws and court cases that define our policies in that topical area. Choose at least 15 of the most important laws You will provide your audience and the users of the guide the means to find the original source i.e., you will give them specific legal references
• 15 specific laws and cases must be: 2 Constitutional Law items (one federal and one Texas) 4 Judicial Law items (court cases) 2 Statutory Law items (one federal and one Texas)
6 Administrative Law items (from federal, Texas , local, and professional sources) – this can include your Code of Ethics. 1 non-law source / academic or professional reference related to your topic that is helpful for professionals

• Briefly provide an interpretation of the law and its affects on the topic; i.e., synthesize this new knowledge of the law with the audience’s knowledge of their job in education.
• The legal guide should provide the reader a sufficient background understanding of the federal government’s programs, the state’s laws, and the courts’ decisions, and the agency’s or university’s regulations such that the user can make a sound legal or ethical decision on a policy or procedure that is not covered in the institution’s policy manual.
