NURS 317 Written Paper
General Guidelines:
For this assignment, you will choose a character depicted in the movie you have chosen. You will apply an ethical issue to the situation of a character in the film. Your paper should include a discussion about identifying, analyzing and evaluating two ethical dilemmas are illustrated in the movie and their relationship to the character and society. It should include a strong development of the conditions portrayed in the film that may have led to the ethical issue including pathophysiology of a disease process if appropriate.
Please see rubric.
Format:
You must use APA 6th ed. formatting for the entire paper. This formatting includes all aspects such as title page, headings, margins, font, text, citations, and references as well as word choice, attention to standards of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Remember to use your professional writing language, not your “speaking to a friend” language. Please follow the additional specifications listed below:
APA has two acceptable margin sizes – 1 inch and 1.5 inches. Use of 1.5-inch margins is limited to documents which are for publication (i.e., in a journal or hard-bound book) so are not appropriate for a short-term paper such as this assignment! You must use 1-inch margins throughout the paper. If you are using Microsoft Word and many other word processing programs, you will have to reset the margins (hint: you may want to reset your default formatting as this will be the requirement for all nursing school papers!).
At a minimum, your paper must include an introduction, body of the paper with section headers appropriate for your topic, and conclusion. There is an absolute limit of five pages for the body of your paper. One page should be the title page and is not included in the five pages. Your references pages will be at the end of the paper and are not included in the page limit. If you submit more than five pages for the body of your paper, grading stops at the end of the 5th page – any information presented on a 6th page is considered “not present.”
Because APA does not recognize handwritten papers, your submission must be in .doc or .docx file format only (this means no .pdf, .wpd, .txt, etc!). If you submit it in any other format, you risk encountering problems with file conversion. I must grade what is submitted, not what you intended to submit.
References must be from peer-reviewed professional nursing journals and books. A minimum of five current peer-reviewed sources is required for this paper. At least three must be peer-reviewed nursing journals, not medical journals. This is not primarily a pathophysiology paper so there should be little if any, use of medical or physiology journals. All references should be current (<5years) and applicable to nursing care in the United States.
Internet sources such as WebMD, Mayoclinic.com, Wikipedia, and other consumer-oriented sites are not acceptable as they are not peer-reviewed and may not be credible. State nursing letters (i.e., Maryland Nurse, NV RNformation, etc.) are also not peer-reviewed so are not considered valid sources of information. Government sites such as CDC, DHS, etc. are acceptable for prevalence, costs, etc.
If you are unsure if your source is considered “peer-reviewed,” don’t hesitate to contact your professor or your librarian. The librarian is a wealth of information on what resources are available to you, how to search, etc.
Paper will be due March 31st at 11:59.
“Cheating, plagiarism or otherwise obtaining grades under false pretenses constitute academic dishonesty according to the code of this university. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated, and penalties can include filing a final grade of “F”; reducing the student’s final course grade one or two full grade points; awarding a failing mark on the coursework in question, or requiring the student to retake or resubmit the coursework” (University of Nevada, Reno General Catalog, Academic Dishonesty Procedures).
In this course, I utilize turnitin.com, an automated system which will be used to quickly and easily compare each student’s assignment with billions of websites, as well as an enormous database of student papers that grows with each submission. Accordingly, you will be expected to submit assignments through the Canvas Assignment Tool in electronic format when directed. After the assignment is processed, I will receive a report from turnitin.com that states if and how another author’s work was used in the assignment. For a more detailed look at this process, visit http://turnitin.com
In short, if a sentence, passage, or paragraph is not your original thought, you must reference your source(s) in the text. Academic dishonesty is a big deal in an academic setting and is particularly worrisome in a profession such as nursing. Academic research has shown that students who commit breaches of academic integrity while in school, tend to continue this sort of behavior in their nursing practice. I take this issue very seriously, and this creates a very uncomfortable situation for me and you. I do not like to question any person’s integrity and am quite confident that you don’t want yours to be challenged. If you run into trouble with this or don’t know how to properly cite a source (or if you need to), PLEASE talk to me about this BEFORE you turn in your paper.
That being said, I don’t want your paper to read like a series of quotations strung together with connecting conjunctions (and, but, although, in the words of …) either. As long as you paraphrase the words of others and give them credit for having said them first, you’ll be fine.
